Scope and Contents

Contains a draft of a biography of George H. Brimhall, which includes Johnson's personal recollections of Brigham Young University. Also contains a loose leaf manuscript of the biography composed by J. Edward Johnson entitled "George H. Brimhall: An Attempted Approximation of His Genius, Accomplishments, Stature," and a letter from Johnson concerning the manuscript. Materials date from approximately 1975.

Biographical History

J. Edward Johnson (1890-1976) was an attorney in California.

John Edward Johnson was born on October 2, 1890 in Murray, Utah to John Johnson and Edla Wilhelmina Lundell. He attended school as a child in Benjamin, Utah, and later high school in Provo. He continued his education at Brigham Young University, where he served as student body president. In 1915 he graduated with a bachelor's degree and took the position of principal at Snowflake Academy in Arizona, remaining in the position until 1917. In 1916 he married Mary Elma Huish, and they had four children.

In 1917 Johnson moved to California to study law, and graduated from the University of California with his juris doctorate in 1920. He worked primarily as a property and banking lawyer, eventually helping to establish the law firm Johnson, Ruggeri and Harmon in San Francisco in 1931. In 1933 his wife Mary died; he remarried the following year to Ethel Lavon Brockbank in Salt Lake City, and they had four children together. Johnson died on April 4, 1976 in Berkeley, California.
