Biographical History

Hyrum Fisher Smith (1856-1923) was the son of John Smith who was the Presiding Patriarch at the time of Hyrum's birth.

Hyrum Fisher Smith was born January 10, 1856. He was the second child of eight in the family of John Smith and Hellen Maria Fisher. John Smith was serving as the Presiding Patriarch of the Church at the time that Hyrum was born. Hyrum married Hannah (Annie) Marie Gibbs December 12, 1878 in Salt Lake City, Utah. The couple moved to Hoytsville, Summit County, Utah, and later to Box Elder County, Utah. They had nine children; Ralph, Evaline, Ruby, Gertrude, Mary, Hyrum G., Annie, John, and Wilford. Hyrum worked for some time at the Lost Josephine Gold Mining Company, during which time he was away from his family. During this time, the older children worked to help support the family. Hyrum Gibbs Smith, the oldest of the children, was called to serve as the Presiding Patriarch of the Church in May of 1912. His father, Hyrum F. Smith, lived to see this appointment. Hyrum F. Smith died March 9, 1923, survived by his wife and all but one of his children.

The contents of this collection were donated to Brigham Young University 8 March 1991 by Eldred G. Smith and Cleone Isom. In December of 2001, it was decided that the Joseph Smith Sr. Family Collection, originally the umbrella title for the Hyrum Smith, John Smith, Hyrum Fisher Smith, and Hyrum G. Smith collections, should be divided into several separate collections. The Hyrum Fisher Smith Collection has been separated into its own collection.

The two donors are the grandchildren of Hyrum Fisher Smith; the papers and personal articles contained in this collection have remained in family possession since their creation.
